I was raised on music of all sorts, southern gospel, country and bluegrass, my grandpa bought me my first piano when I was 8 and piano lessons began. I suppose that he was my push to the interest and respect I have today for the music in my soul. Although the piano was not my first choice, I soon became involved in school bands and chorus. I found that I loved to sing and entertain anyone who'd listen. His influences were strong as he was a picker himself, and a might fine one I might add.
I am the mother of 7 children, 4 boys and 3 girls. No super-mom in any way at all but I have the best support group of anyone pickin' today. They each love and respect music. Not all are true-hearted bluegrass fans but 4 pick while the other 3 give credit where it is due to traditional bluegrass roots as the three of them too are involved in music thru highschool and jr. high school bands. The oldest plays a Taylor guitar quite well, and then there is the 9 year old, now performing with my band on festivals doing serveral lead vocals and also learning to play a Taylor. His favorite out there in the bluegrass world is Little Roy Lewis simply because of the energy he has on shows. It inspired this child that the love of bluegrass music is real fun and only gets better.Next there's an 8 year that has true interest in the bass simple because mom is doing it for a living. And finally there is the baby...6 years old whose hero is Ralph Stanley. At the age of 4 he came to his daddy and I to request a banjo, a lot easier to clean up after than the puppy the neighboro's kid got I might add, this child's first bluegrass festival was one that Ralph Stanley was on and he was hooked from that weekend on. His request this summer was to go to a bluegrass festival to see his hero instead of disney world.
