I don't play in a bluegrass band. I've never yet been to a bluegrass festival or jammed with bluegrass musicians, but for as long as I can remember I've loved bluegrass music. I was born in Central Virginia, and my earliest memories of my maternal grandfather were those of sitting on the porch, at his feet, listening to him sing bluegrass tunes and play his banjo (banjer as he pronounced it). I never knew the names of the songs he sang, but he some of them he sang with such conviction they would make me cry. Growing up, my mama would put the ironing board up in my room on Friday nights and iron the weeks laundry while singing bluegrass songs that I requested. As a teenager she had played guitar and sang bluegrass music with some friends on the local radio station. As I grew older and we moved to the city I'm ashamed to say I became a "closet" bluegrass lover. I only listened to it when no one else was around. I got involved in other types of music, rock, country, but I always came back to bluegrass. Finally, about 5 years ago I started listening to bluegrass again, this time with a renewed interest. I've met lots of folks who share my interests for bluegrass and they have shared with me their ideas, thoughts and taught me lots, but I have a lot more to learn.
I'm sure my story isn't as exciting as most; especially those involved in the bands or those of the pickers, but I'm just as enthusiastic in my love for bluegrass as the next person!!
